QE Rationale
This primary data project proposes an Audio Augmented Reality system for the historic Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledåd on Guåhan (Guam). Beyond the technical framework, the paper takes a deliberate methodological stance: consistent use of CHamoru orthography throughout, and an explicit acknowledgment that the fort's colonial history sits on land the CHamoru people recognized long before its construction. That attentiveness to whose history a technology represents — and whose it risks obscuring — reflects the ethical rigor the Scholarship and Research domain expects of primary data work.
Author Note
Throughout this paper, the indigenous name Guåhan to refer to the island commonly known as Guam is utilized. Additionally, the term CHamoru is capitalized with both the "C" and "H" to reflect its status as a digraph—a single letter—within the CHamoru alphabet. This follows contemporary orthographic standards used in Guam to accurately represent and honor the indigenous language and identity. As a researcher, I am mindful that the proposed auditory framework is based on a space that was recognized by the CHamoru people long before the first stone of the fort was laid. While this project aims to reconstruct the historical period of the 1810 fortification, I recognize the inherent conflict in layering colonial sounds over a site that is fundamentally sacred to the ancestors of Guåhan.
